Jenny Polak

Lengua, Libertad (Language, Liberation)

A language-lesson-as-art-and-activism: turning the tables on herself (the English-speaker), the artist will make a spectacle which highlights the Spanish-speaking immigrant as the one with knowledge: the expert. Her instructors will be recruited by ‘help wanted’ ads in Spanish, inviting people to come and teach Polak how to discuss the latest efforts to stop deportation and restrain the for-profit detention system, in Spanish. The student-teacher ratio of the typical lesson will be inverted: there will be teachers’ podiums for two to three teachers and the artist, the only student, will award certificates to the teachers.
