Listening Posts
“Tap into the wires” and listen to recordings that examine surveillance culture in the USA, drawn from previously classified materials released through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Listening Posts is equal parts documentary performance, interactive sound installation and public service announcement. Between Avenue A and First Avenue there are six listening posts––specially marked small metal utility boxes that are attached to parking sign poles––each with a headphone jack at their base. Once located, plug your headphones in to listen to soundscapes that use “free information” to explore notions of privacy, restriction and freedom.
